Backcountry Camping

Reservations are required.

Savage Gulf has 9 backcountry campgrounds with 62 backcountry campsites and 8 backcountry group campsites. Savage Gulf also has one backcountry cabin, Hobbs Cabin. Hiking is required to reach all campsites and Hobbs Cabin. Campsites at Stone Door Campground and Savage Station Campground are available only a few hundred yards from the parking lot. 

Site capacity information can be found under site features on the campsite reservation page. Please look closely at your campsite's capacity when reserving. 

Savage Gulf State Park encourages visitors to reserve their campsite early to ensure they have a site upon arrival. Remember to follow all park rules and be prepared to have a rewarding backcountry experience. 

Water must be filtered from natural sources or carried in, be sure to check with the ranger stations about water availability. At Stone Door Campground and Savage Station Campground, potable water is available at the campground entrance. A designated fire area and a pit toilet are also available at each campground. 

Stone Door Campground

Stone Door Campground offers twelve backcountry campsites with a maximum occupancy of six per campsite and three backcountry group campsites with varying maximum occupancies. 

This backcountry campground can be accessed from the Savage Gulf North overnight parking lot. All campsites are located a few hundred yards from the parking lot. Potable water is available from a spigot in the campground. 

Group Campsites: 

Stone Door Campground offers three group campsites: A, B, and C. 

  • Max Occupancy of Group Campsite A: 30 
  • Max Occupancy of Group Campsite B: 45 
  • Max Occupancy of Group Campsite C: 60

Stagecoach Road Campground

Nightly rates vary based on date and availability. Reservations are required. Applicable taxes and fees applied at checkout. The $5 reservation fee per site is non-refundable.

Stagecoach Road Campground offers seven backcountry campsites with a maximum occupancy of six people per campsite and one backcountry group campsite with a maximum occupancy of 30 people. 

Entering from the Savage Gulf East parking lot; campground is 6.1 miles via the Savage Day Loop and South Rim trails. Entering from the Savage Gulf South parking lot; campground is 7.5 miles via the Collins Rim and South Rim trails. There is a seasonal stream nearby. Water may not be available during dry conditions. 

Group Campsite: 

Stagecoach Road Campground offers one backcountry group campsite. Group Campsite Maximum Occupancy: 30

Sawmill Campground

Sawmill Campground offers eight backcountry campsites with a max occupancy of six per campsite. 

Entering from the Savage Gulf North parking lot; campground is 5.0 miles via the Stone Door, Big Creek Gulf, and Connector trails. Entering from the Savage Gulf South parking lot; campground is 4.2 miles via the Collins Gulf trail. Water is available from Schwoon Spring.

Savage Station Campground offers seven campsites with a maximum occupancy of six per campsite and one group campsite with a maximum occupancy of 30. 

This backcountry campground can be accessed from the Savage Gulf East overnight parking lot. All campsites are located a few hundred yards from the parking lot. Potable water is available at the campground entrance. 

Group Campsites: 

Savage Station Campground offers one group campsite: Campsite #4. Group Campsite Maximum Occupancy: 30

Savage Falls Campground

Savage Falls Campground offers four campsites with a maximum occupancy of six people per campsite and one group campsite with a maximum occupancy of 30 people. 

Entering from the Savage Gulf East parking lot; the campground is 1.5 miles via the Savage Day Loop and South Rim trails. Water is available from Savage Falls. 

Group Campsite: 

Savage Falls Campground offers one backcountry group campsite. Group Camp Maximum Occupancy: 30

Hobbs Cabin Campground

Hobbs Cabin Campground offers seven backcountry campsites with a maximum occupancy of six per campsite, one group campsite with a maximum occupancy of 30, and one backcountry cabin with a maximum occupancy of six.

Entering from the Savage Gulf East parking lot; campground is 8.5 miles via the Savage Day Loop and North Rim trails. There is a spring behind the cabin. Water may not be available during dry conditions. 

Group Campsite: 

Hobbs Cabin Campground offers one group campsite: Campsite #8. Group Campsite Maximum Occupancy: 30 

Hobbs Cabin

This is a primitive shelter with six wood bunks. Features include a wood-burning fireplace, picnic table, and fire ring. Tent and hammock camping around the Hobbs Cabin is prohibited. Entering from the Savage Gulf East parking lot; cabin is 8.5 miles via the Savage Day Loop and North Rim trails. There is a spring behind the cabin. Water may not be available during dry conditions. 

There is no vehicle access to Hobbs Cabin. Maximum Occupancy: 6

Dinky Line Campground

Dinky Line Campground offers four backcountry campsites with a max occupancy of six per campsite. 

Entering from Savage Gulf East parking lot; campground is 3.5 miles via the Savage Day Loop and North Plateau trails or 5.8 miles via the Savage Day Loop, North Rim, and Mountain Oak trails. There is a seasonal stream nearby. Water may not be available during dry conditions.

Collins West Campground

Collins West Campground offers six backcountry campsites with a maximum occupancy of six per campsite. 

Entering from the Savage Gulf South parking lot; campground is 0.5 miles via the Collins access trail. There is a seasonal spring nearby. Water may not be available during dry conditions.

Alum Gap Campground offers eight backcountry campsites with a max occupancy of six per campsite and one group campsite with a max occupancy of 30. 

Entering from the Savage Gulf North parking lot; campground is 2.9 miles via the Laurel trail or 4.0 miles via the Stone Door and Big Creek Rim trails. There is a seasonal stream nearby. Water may not be available during dry conditions. 

No overnight parking at the Savage Gulf West parking area.

Group Campground: 

Alum Gap Campground offers one backcountry group campsite. Group Campsite Maximum Occupancy: 30
