Natural Areas 50th Anniversary

Tennessee Natural Areas 50th Anniversary

Celebrate 50 years of the Natural Areas Preservation Act of 1971

Division of Natural Areas and Tennessee State Parks will celebrate 50 years of the Natural Areas Preservation Act with special, guided hikes at Natural Areas across Tennessee on Saturday, May 1, 2021.

May 4, 2021 marks 50 years since the passage of the Natural Areas Preservation Act of 1971. Since then, nearly 130,000 acres of pristine forests, scenic vistas, undisturbed wetlands, grasslands, barrens, and glades representing the highest quality natural communities and harboring some of Tennessee’s rarest species have been preserved thanks to this legislation.

Please join us in celebrating this golden anniversary by attending one of these guided hikes led by field experts committed to preserving and protecting these wonderful places.

Want to support your favorite natural area?

Donated funds may be used for rare species monitoring, management or reintroductions, or various land management efforts such as prescribed burning or mechanical clearing. They may also be used to enhance visitor infrastructure on Designated State Natural Areas through trail improvements, parking, and access control measures.
